Private college in Iowa

Yes, you can afford a great education for your kid.

Financially and emotionally, we feel your pain. Leaving the nest for college is a tough one for child and parent. New city. Maybe a new state. Fortunately, the antidote is ready: one of Iowa’s 29 private colleges and universities.

Q: Private college! Isn't that awfully expensive?
A: When you do the math, Iowa private colleges and universities are not the bite out of the wallet you may think. A quality private education costs considerably less than out-of-state tuition and, with proper financial aid, on par with one of Iowa’s public universities.

Q: Get outta town!
A: No, really. Practically every Iowa private college student takes advantage of the generous aid available. And then there's the Iowa Tuition Grant - currently up to $3,875 a year (!) for up to four years.

Q: Wow, that's . uh . $15,500 over four years!
A: And, most of the students at selective Iowa private colleges and universities earn their bachelor's degrees in four years. Most public university students go into a fifth year of study.

That almost doubles your chances of helping out with tuition for just four, not five, years.

Q: Can a student get an up-to-$3,875-a-year Iowa Tuition Grant to attend a public school?
A: Nope.

Q: How does one apply?
A: Info for the Iowa Tuition Grant along with details and applications for financial aid of every stripe can be found at the Iowa College Student Aid Commission site. Go check it out. We'll wait till you get back.

Q: Man, there's lots of funding out there for Iowa private college and university students!
A: You betcha. And let's not forget the quality of education your favorite kid will get at a private school. With an average student-to-teacher ratio of 14:1, they won't just be a face in the crowd.

Q: I'm convinced. But how do I talk my kid out of that "really kewl" out-of-state university?

A: Easy:
  • Too expensive.
  • We don't want you to get lost in the crowd.
  • We'd feel better, in this day and age, if you went to school close to home.
  • That thing you call a car will never make it to another state.
  • Mom's tuna casserole will be over 500 miles away (be careful with this one).
And the old standard:
  • Fine. You pay for it.

Of course, there's more involved than money.
